You’re waiting for them to tell you. They’re waiting for you to ask. “I had an interesting weekend.” You’ve heard a statement. They meant it as an invitation. Now there’s a silence, and apparently your line was “Oh, what happened?” You care. You’re listening. You just thought they’d tell you the rest without needing a prompt. Or you DO ask questions, but there’s a whole process happening behind them. They asked about my weekend. Ask about theirs. They mentioned a friend. Should I ask which friend? Is that too personal? Have I asked enough? Am I interviewing them now? The questions are coming out. That doesn’t tell us how much work went into them. If this comes up in your autism assessment, describe what actually happens for you. Do questions pop into your head naturally, or do you consciously work out what you’re supposed to ask? Can you follow the conversation while doing that, or does planning your next question pull your attention away from what they’re saying? Does it feel easy, manageable, tiring, or like something you can only keep up for so long? And would you rather they just tell you, then you respond with a thought or experience of your own? A conversation that moves through shared statements, without either person needing to keep prompting the other? Tell the easy bits too. Perhaps questions come naturally with your closest people or when you’re absorbed in the topic. “Do you ask questions?” tells me much less than “How does asking questions actually work for you?” No single conversational preference confirms or rules out autism. The pattern, context and effort matter. Follow for more, and send me a DM with AXTIPS for my free Autism Assessment Companion to help you remember, organise and explain your own experiences.
