I don’t teach HS so it might be different, but I have started letting groups fire people if they aren’t doing their part.

One thing I think high schools that teach AP, need to do a seminar about how to handle syllabus and group managements.

They are never great! Just keep moving. Have them grade one another. Did you do the lesson where the the teams create their own expectations and consequences? It helps a lot. AP Sem is great and they improve so much over the year.

I hate when teachers don’t take it into consideration when one student doesn’t contribute. That is so unfair to the kids who want the good grade and have to everything.

Allow them to fire a group member who isn’t doing their work. To do so, they must document what the student isn’t doing-not showing up for meetings, not bringing their work in, goofing off. Bring the documentation to you as “HR” and you decide if that student is fireable for their offenses. Then they can do the work along or get an F. Makes students work harder and the really bad kids can get pushed out without thinking the group.

I’m sure they had to qualify to be in an AP class so they aren’t strangers to work hard to accomplish the task. Hold them accountable because their bosses will.
