Basically, white people are finding out how People of Color been living all this time. Small businesses in poor Black and Brown neighborhood have been charging to use credit cards for as long as I’ve been alive.

so they are only allowed to do that for CREDIT cards, not debit. If you get charged for a debit card, report the merchant to Visa or MC.

Credit card surcharges were against credit card company terms or illegal (both in NY) for most of our lives. The companies started allowing it after some massive class actions (2013ish?), and the NY law against them was overturned like 10 years ago. So yeah… restaurants don’t want to eat the cost and now they’re allowed to pass it on. NY in the last couple years has rolled out rules to disclose the surcharges better, so you were probably already paying them a lot and now you’re seeing it upfront more.

It used to be illegal to charge a credit card processing fee and you could get your credit card privileges as a business revoked. I don’t know when that changed but I’ve been seeing those fees and a lot of other bullshit fees heavily since Covid.

It’s laziness. Credit card fees are considered administrative and should be included in the price of each product. Standard product costing includes all fixed and variable costs of the business.
