One of the greatest things you can gain from changing your relationship with your body isn’t necessarily confidence in how you look. It’s freedom from constantly thinking about how you look. We live in a world where women’s bodies are treated as lifelong projects. There’s always something to lose, tighten, tone or improve. And just when you think you’ve reached one standard, another one appears. I think we underestimate how much mental and emotional energy this constant self monitoring takes from us. The time spent worrying about food, comparing ourselves to others, scrutinising photographs or believing life will somehow be better once our bodies look different. Imagine what we could do with all that energy instead. And here’s something worth considering. If your confidence depends entirely on how closely your body matches a particular beauty standard how secure can that confidence really be? Our bodies will change throughout our lives. We age, our weight fluctuates, our circumstances change. Building our entire sense of worth around maintaining a particular appearance means constantly fighting against something that was never going to stay the same. This is one reason I believe strength training can be so valuable for women. It gives us an opportunity to develop a relationship with our bodies based on what we can DO rather than how we LOOK. But even strength and performance shouldn’t become another measure of our worth. The point isn’t to replace one impossible standard with another. You don’t have to wait until you love everything you see in the mirror to start living your life fully. Not when you’ve lost another 10kg. Not when your stomach is flatter. Not when you’ve reached somebody else’s idea of what your body should look like. Your life is happening right now. And you have so much more to offer the world than being visually pleasing to other people.
