@intentional.anna: adhd isn’t an attention deficit — it’s an attention regulation disorder 🤍 (that one word changes everything.) the question that comes up constantly: “how can someone with adhd lock in for six hours on the thing they love, but completely fall apart trying to do the dishes or go grocery shopping?” if attention were truly “deficient,” it’d be missing across the board. it isn’t. the real issue is regulation. an adhd brain can’t reliably point its attention at will — it gets pulled toward whatever’s interesting, novel or urgent, and goes dark for the boring-but-necessary stuff. and the reason is chemical: when a task genuinely interests you, the dopamine shows up and focus flows. when it doesn’t, the dopamine simply isn’t there, and no amount of “trying harder” manufactures it. so when attention won’t cooperate for the boring task, external structure does the regulating the brain can’t do on its own — a focus timer like the ones on the Opal app (I have this linked in bio) that creates a start, a container, and removes the exits, so attention has something to hold onto even when the dopamine’s gone missing. 💬 what’s the task your brain flat-out refuses to do? save this for the next time someone says you “just need to focus.” 🎙️: @Gabrielle Swanson, LCSW #adhdinwomen #neurodivergent #adhdbrain #executivedysfunction #latediagnosedadhd
