@aaronthewolfe: Adult skating friends, I need you to weigh in. ⛸️😂 Apparently, trying to remember how to do a sit spin and a waltz jump at public skate is controversial these days. Listen, I get it. Safety first. And I know some rinks prohibit spins and jumps. But the rules vary, and when there’s barely anyone on the ice, I feel like there’s room for a little common sense. And before anyone comes for me, I skated competitively for years. My freestyle hesitation is more about being humbled by my former skating abilities than not knowing what I’m doing. 😂 The bigger challenge? We’re adults with jobs. Freestyle sessions aren’t exactly scheduled around our 9-to-5s, so sometimes public skate is what we’ve got. Anyway, my Sunday adventure ended with a conversation with the manager, ZERO skating, and a refund. 😂😂 So tell me, are spins and jumps allowed at your rink during public sessions? And should they be? #AdultFigureSkating #FigureSkating #IceSkating

Personally I do jumps and spins at public sessions at memorial city in houston (which is unfortunately closing) but I’ve seen a mix a rink cultures and what is and isn’t allowed in each rink. I think if it’s empty and there’s room it should be allowed… camel spins I reserve for when I feel I have the most space. There are people at that public skate that work on doubles with their coaches so I really think the rules depend per rink

i’ve never been to a public skate where you can jump! it seems safe to avoid jumping unless no one is around. slow/simpler spins seem fine

i’m just begging u to pay attention because there are kids and inexperienced skaters who can’t quickly get out of your way. my 2nd time ever on the ice i got a blade to the stomach from someone practicing their landing position going against the traffic

hi! my friends who have been to the other star center rinks have told me that only the farmers branch has inconsistent public skate rules on not being allowed to jump/spin. i ended up not ever going back to farmers branch and have been going to the other starcenter ones.

My rink used to cone off the center during public but stopped during Covid and never resumed. They allow single jumps and some spins but no spirals, camel spins or flying entries.

Every rink is so different. My rink is the wild Wild West, there was a girl working on double axels at our public today lol. It can also depend who is literally working at the time.

only in the middle and IF it’s not busy! and check before every attempt but it really does vary by who is there

i find rinks tend to be super inconsistent about it, which sucks. at my rink, one time at an empty public (it was literally 3 figure skaters and 3 public skaters), they were just letting anything go. one girl was cranking out 2As lmao, and then on a similarly empty public, they were like no figure skating allowed 😢

My rink allows treating public skate like a freestyle session on the weekdays AND has designated adult skate sessions. I love it so much 😭🫶

Farmers branch is the worst StarCenter, you can’t even do crossovers across the ice or anything, Mansfield doesn’t let you jump or spin either and they turn off the lights.

it's a public session. it's open to anything and everything. i see people doing doubles and axels at public sessions all the time. I have had no issues doing spins and jumps. but it's also rink dependent

It really does depend rink to rink, and mine will even change it depending on volume of public skate that day it's so exhausting 🤧 sometimes we have the whole rink, other days they'll just section off a little bit in the middle for figure skaters. But none at all? Yeah I'd ask for my money back especially if you called ahead

It’s not the standard nor the policy. Whoever told you that is wrong and on a power trip. Btw Euless’s weekday morning freestyles (before high), farmer’s early afternoon freestyles, and McKinney 9:15 and later in the morning are all empty. I know full time jobs don’t really allow but maybe on a lunch?

It’s a rink thing, both rinks I go to don’t care so long as you’re aware of your surroundings and don’t run into anyone. Idk what rink that is but based on these comments I don’t think it’s a good one 😔

Detroit area here and have 4 rinks in my monthly rotation- not only do none of them care, i haven't seen a single rink employee in the rink area during open skate at any of the rinks. Ever. Which is fine when it's empty, but just had a session yesterday where about 8 unsupervised children were using those big plastic pushy things as battering rams on each other and the boards. and they kept following me wherever I went. So I left. 🙃
