@gerrit.vermeulen87: Why did this jet fall out of the sky? ✈️ On Sunday, 1 November, a Learjet 60 flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas fell from about 35,000 feet onto a street in Greenacres, Florida, in roughly a minute and a half. All nine people on board died. The cause has not been determined yet. The NTSB is investigating. But the radio calls, tracking data and weather already show a strange chain of events: 🔹 The crew reported turbulence and ice, and asked to climb to 37,000 ft. Up there, jets fly in the "coffin corner": the slowest safe speed and the fastest safe speed come close together. 🔹 The strange part: they reported "clear ice" at about −47 °C, where liquid water can't exist. One analyst points out it was more likely ice crystals from the storm, which can clog the tubes that measure airspeed, as happened to Air France 447 in 2009. Whether that happened here is not yet known. 🔹 Then: mayday, overspeed, and a dive of more than 30,000 feet per minute. 🔹 On the ground: a crater, cut power lines and water mains, and about 600 people evacuated. No deaths were reported on the ground. The old rule in aviation: stay at least 20 nautical miles from severe thunderstorms. Not above them. Not through them. Around them.
