@pulsesouthafrica27: South Africa's controversial Phala Phala scandal is back in the spotlight as the Modimolle Regional Court delivers judgment in the case involving the theft of more than US$580,000 (approximately R9.6 million) from President Cyril Ramaphosa's game farm in February 2020. During proceedings on Monday, 2 November, Magistrate Peter Manthata read out details of how the stolen money was allegedly spent. According to evidence presented in court, the purchases included: Two Mercedes-Benz G63 vehicles. A Porsche. A BMW M5. A Rolex watch. Residential property. Several other luxury vehicles. The three accused are Imanuwela David, Froliana Joseph and Ndilinasho Joseph. They face charges including housebreaking, theft, conspiracy to commit theft and money laundering. The state relied on cellphone records, banking transactions and evidence of purchases allegedly made using the stolen money. The defence argued that the case was circumstantial and lacked direct DNA or fingerprint evidence linking the accused to the crime. But what does this mean for Ramaphosa? It is important to distinguish between two separate legal matters: The criminal trial: This concerns the three people accused of stealing the money from the farm. The presidential accountability process: This concerns questions about the source of the cash, the handling of the burglary investigation and whether Ramaphosa breached constitutional or other legal obligations. Ramaphosa has challenged the findings of the Section 89 Independent Panel in court. The Western Cape High Court reserved judgment on his review application in September 2026. The criminal trial does not, by itself, establish that Ramaphosa committed wrongdoing. The latest report says judgment was expected on 2 November. It does not yet establish the final verdict or sentences. Suggested closing question for Pulse South Africa Do you believe the Phala Phala scandal has been fully explained to the South African public, or are there still important questions that President Ramaphosa must answer?
