Pink or blue? Depending on the soil where you live, hydrangeas will bloom pink or blue or something in between! Hydrangea flowers are blue where the soil is more acidic, and tend to be pink where the soil is more alkaline. But in the world of ceramics I can make hydrangea flowers any color, or both! And now that we are in October, my hydrangeas have finished blooming and are entering their dormant state like they are in most places. But I can look back on these pieces I made recently and see the beautiful florets and leaves preserved forever in clay. That’s what I love about what I do. I can’t re-create nature, but I can capture moments of its fleeting beauty and add my own interpretation as an artist. To create these ceramic dishes, I start by rolling out clay. Then I press the flowers and leaves into soft ceramic clay. I use a simple rolling pin to make the imprints. I love pulling away the leaves and flowers and revealing the intricate botanical imprints. After a preliminary kiln firing to harden the clay, I color the flowers and leaves in the style of watercolor, using ceramic stains and underglazes. Then I glaze the ceramic, firing the dish in a pottery kiln to over 2200°F. At these temperatures the clay becomes transformed into dense ceramic and the glaze melts into a beautiful shiny layer of glass coating the piece. The gold trim on the edge of this ceramic dish is real 22 karat gold. #artprocess #hydrangea #botanical #satisfying #pottery
