@nym_news: JUST IN: The #Mets have signed infielder Christian Cairo to a one-year major league split contract. Cairo, 25, spent the end of the 2026 season with the Mets at Triple-A Syracuse after he got DFA’d by the Phillies in September. Although Cairo only batted .230, he finished with a career-high .381 OBP after finishing 5th among all Triple-A players in 2026 after also finishing with a career-high 96 walks. Another thing the Mets like about Cairo is his speed combined with his versatility. The former 4th round pick has posted at least 25 stolen bases in each of the last 3 seasons, and has played 7 different positions during his professional career. While Cairo has some experience playing throughout the outfield, he has primarily played third base, second base and shortstop. This season Cairo played SS in 45.4% of his games, also playing either 2B or 3B in 35.4% of his games. A split contract pays a player at two different rates; higher salary for time spent in MLB and lower salary for time in the minors. The Mets made this move to add to their infield depth entering 2027.
