❓How do you get diagnosed with hypermobility? Well, the gold standard is (unfortunately) still considered to be the Beighton Score test. This is a nine point checklist: can you touch your thumb to your wrist (left & right), can you bend your fingers back >90 degrees (L&R), do your knees hyperextend (L&R), do your elbows hyperextend (L&R), and can you bend forward and touch the floor with palms flat. The issue with this test is it lets people fall through the cracks. It’s great at ruling people IN (if you test positive you likely have generalised hypermobility), but can provide false positives when ruling people OUT (I.e. just because you test negative; doesn’t mean you do not have generalised hypermobility). Having hypermobility does not mean you have a connective tissue disorder. In fact, 1/5 adults have generalised hypermobility and 1/3 adult women. However, I think from a clinical perspective that more doctors should be screening for hypermobility when trying to understand complex symptoms. For example, if you present with fatigue to a doctor, there are multiple sources of fatigue that are linked to hypermobility, and it may help to get a more accurate solution if hypermobility is screened for. ESPECIALLY in the presence of ADHD, autism, pain, and other related diagnoses. ❓Do you need to care about hypermobility if you have no other symptoms? Well in my world – strength training – yes you do. Even so-called “asymptomatic hypermobility” can require that we adjust our approach to strength training and strength based rehab. Hypermobility provides a lens that clinicians and coaches can look through to understand their patients/clients better. It’s not trendy, it’s not a buzz word. It’s useful medical information that disproportionately affects women and has finally been given a platform. #heds #pots #mcas #audhd #hypermobility
