I used to think being a good person meant being available to everyone. I answered messages when I needed rest. I agreed to things I did not want. I apologized before saying how I felt, as though having needs was something I had to explain. People called me easygoing. They rarely saw how much I struggled afterward. For years, I confused being needed with being valued. Every disappointed face felt like proof that I had failed someone. So I kept giving, hoping that if I loved people well enough, they would notice when I needed care too. Sometimes they did. Sometimes they did not. But I had never learned to ask. The change came slowly. One honest conversation. One invitation declined. One evening when I put my phone down and let myself rest without writing a long explanation. At first, saying no felt uncomfortable. I would replay conversations and wonder whether I had sounded cold. Sometimes I still do. Growing older has not made me fearless. It has helped me understand that discomfort does not always mean I have done something wrong. I have also learned that boundaries come with responsibility. I can speak clearly without being cruel. I can listen to someone’s disappointment without changing every decision. And I can admit when I have handled something badly without abandoning what I need. I still want to be generous. I still want to show up for the people I love. But I want my yes to be honest, freely given, and something I can follow through on without resentment. These days, peace looks ordinary. Enough sleep. Fewer promises. Relationships where honesty has room to breathe. I wish I had learned this sooner, but I am grateful to be learning it now. I can care deeply for others and finally include myself in that care. #ChoosingPeace #HealthyBoundaries #SelfRespect #PersonalGrowth #PeoplePleaserRecovery
