What if one of the greatest gifts we could give our children is letting them see that dads have feelings, dreams, and stories too? Because somewhere along the way, fatherhood becomes so much about taking care of everyone else that we forget to ask dads about themselves. We ask if the kids are doing well. If the family is happy. If everything is taken care of. But how often do we ask a father what’s going on in his heart? What he’s learning. What he’s proud of. Or what he hopes his children will remember about him one day. That’s part of why we created Dad Pick Up. We placed a phone in the middle of a park with a simple invitation. Dad, pick up. You need this. And we watched different fathers take a moment out of their day to answer a question about fatherhood. Some stood there alone. Others had their children right beside them. And there’s something especially meaningful about that. Because our children don’t just learn from the things we teach them. They learn from the way we live. The way we speak about our experiences. The way we show up for the people we love. And even the way we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. We talk a lot about raising strong children. But maybe part of raising strong children is showing them that strength and vulnerability can exist in the same person. That a father can be dependable and still have questions. Confident and still be learning. Strong and still have moments when he needs to be heard. That’s the kind of example we hope to encourage through Dad Built. A generation of fathers who understand that being present means more than simply being there. It means bringing your heart into the moments that matter. Even the ordinary ones. Because years from now, our children may not remember every lesson we tried to teach them. But they’ll remember how it felt to have us in their lives.
