Dystopian novels were warnings, not instruction manuals… right? One of the reasons dystopian fiction sticks with us is that it rarely invents human behavior from scratch. It takes recognizable systems, fears, technologies, choices, and tendencies—and asks what might happen if we keep pushing. That doesn't mean we're living in 1984. It doesn't mean the Patriot Games are The Hunger Games. It doesn't mean a challenged book is the same thing as a burned one, or that the United States is Gilead. A parallel is not an equivalence. But parallels are still worth examining. 1984. The Hunger Games. Fahrenheit 451. The Handmaid's Tale. Brave New World. The Circle. The Giver. Seven dystopian novels written across nearly a century—and seven warnings that feel worth revisiting in 2026. So I'm curious: Which of these connections feels strongest to you? Which feels like a stretch? What dystopian novel—or contemporary parallel—would you add? Disagreement is welcome. That's kind of the point.
