After years of pain, I finally got a diagnosis. Some time after I moved to Germany, I went to a doctor because I had been having so many problems and was in constant pain. I remember trying to explain everything I was experiencing, and he kept telling me it was probably just stress from moving to a new country. So I did everything I could to be healthier. I changed my lifestyle, tried different things, did everything you’re supposed to do. But nothing changed. If anything, it got worse. Then I was told it was simply ✨anxiety ✨ The pain became debilitating. And the hardest part was that every test kept coming back normal. Blood tests normal. Labs normal. Every appointment ended the same way: everything looks fine. After hearing that enough times, you start to question yourself. More doctors. More tests. Same thing. Eventually I found a doctor who really listened. She suspected what it might be, but told me it would be a long road. And it was. Two and a half years later, I finally had the surgery. That’s when they found it. And the craziest part is that I had been dismissed for so long that going into the surgery, I actually thought I might be wasting everyone’s time. But I wasn’t. Even though it’s not the best news, I’m so freaking relieved that, no, it wasn’t all in my head. Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the diagnosis. It’s being believed. ••••• Hi, I’m Brittany, a U.S. immigrant living in Germany sharing my life here—from healthcare and culture to travel and the little things that make Germany so unique.
