@mushinjournal: The Japanese concept “Isshin” (一心) translates closely to “one heart”; the state in which a person and their direction become so unified that the distractions pulling at everyone else simply stop appearing. The effort it takes to hold a path is a measure of how little you have committed to it. A direction truly chosen needs no guarding; only the ones held loosely, with the exits still open, must be defended against every passing alternative. The constant labor of pulling the mind back into line is not discipline. It is the sound of a decision still being made. Isshin is the recognition that distraction is nothing more than unclear direction wearing a disguise. The horse that knows the trail does not battle the forest on either side; it does not see a forest at all, only the way forward, because nothing in it is still asking whether another way might be better. This is the difference between concentration and unity. Concentration is the constant labor of excluding the alternatives. Unity has no alternatives to exclude, because the self and the goal have become a single thing, and a single thing cannot be divided against itself. The one who is certain of the destination does not resist the detours. He has stopped being able to see them as detours. A river bound for the sea does not consider the thousand valleys it could wander into; the pull of the sea is so total that the valleys are not temptations, only ground it was never going to touch. The distractions never had a hold on you. You were simply not yet certain where you were going. - Mushin Journal exists for those who want to think less, see more, and act with deliberate precision - whether in conflict, decision making, or solitude.
