@._.7._.t_.t_.u.5_: There’s a moment toward the end of the latest live that I find particularly interesting, it connects directly to what we discussed earlier about the protocol team member. This time, however, the subject is Mr. Lee. Let me briefly explain. After Taehyung recalls how Sanghyun became “famous” for flawlessly intercepting a bottle thrown from the audience during the IDOL parade, Jin mentions seeing a fan banner featuring Mr. Lee himself. The members speak very fondly of him, joking and laughing about someone they’ve shared an incredibly close bond with for over a decade. But then Jungkook does something interesting. He imitates one of Mr. Lee’s gestures, putting a finger to his lips as if telling people to be quiet. And how does he describe that gesture? FAN SERVICE. Yes. FAN SERVICE. This is why I wanted to bring this moment to your attention, because it offers a perfect opportunity to discuss a concept that fandoms constantly misunderstand, distort, or conveniently redefine. WHAT EXACTLY IS FAN SERVICE? In entertainment, fan service refers to gestures, interactions, or content that appeal to an audience, satisfy its expectations, or encourage engagement. It doesn’t necessarily involve romance, intimacy, or anything remotely sexual. It can be a smile, a pose, a joke, a playful interaction, or simply a recognizable gesture that fans enjoy. And importantly, FAN SERVICE IS NOT INHERENTLY NEGATIVE. There’s perfectly harmless fan service: entertaining, playful, and sometimes spontaneous. Mr. Lee is a perfect example. He’s a BODYGUARD. His job is to protect the members, not entertain their fans. Yet he’s become recognizable and appreciated enough that fans even display banners featuring him. And Jungkook himself jokingly identifies one of his gestures as FAN SERVICE. Think about what that means… FAN SERVICE ISN’T EVEN EXCLUSIVE TO IDOLS. It can involve anyone who becomes part of the fandom’s world and attracts its attention. When a particular gesture generates enthusiasm, repeating or emphasizing it can become another way of entertaining the audience. Because it works. Because people react. Because it generates attention. But here’s where an important distinction comes in. HARMLESS FAN SERVICE VS. TOXIC FAN SERVICE. Harmless fan service entertains without necessarily implying anything beyond the interaction itself. It becomes problematic when certain interactions are repeatedly exaggerated, exploited, or interpreted as confirmation of narratives that fans have already decided must be true. And the toxicity originates from the AUDIENCE. A hug is not automatically romantic. A glance isn’t proof of a secret relationship. And a playful interaction doesn’t suddenly become evidence of intimacy simply because thousands of shippers desperately want it to be. The real problem begins when fans turn entertainment into supposed FACTS, demand that real people conform to their imaginary relationships, and attack anyone who challenges their narrative. And it becomes even more questionable when that attention continues to be encouraged despite the toxic consequences surrounding it. ENTERTAINING AN AUDIENCE IS ONE THING. CONTINUOUSLY FEEDING A NARRATIVE THAT FUELS TOXIC BEHAVIOR IS ANOTHER. That’s why Jungkook’s choice of words is so interesting. He’s not discussing a couple, a ship, or a romantic interaction. He’s talking about a BODYGUARD. Yet the underlying mechanism is exactly the same. A recognizable gesture. An enthusiastic audience. An interaction that becomes entertaining because fans respond to it. So here’s my question: If even a bodyguard’s gesture can be called fan service, why do some people insist that every interaction between two idols must represent something romantic or deeply personal? Fan service it’s part of the entertainment industry. The point isn’t to condemn it, it’s to understand how it works and recognize the difference between what actually happens and what fans choose to project onto it….

At the heart of it, idols are performers and storytellers. That’s the very nature of their industry. In fact, storytelling is central to how Big Hit made BTS into a global phenomenon. They mastered the art of creating narratives that audiences could connect with, both onstage and off. JK acknowledging Mr. Lee’s fan service was also a reminder that fan service isn’t confined to idols or the stage. As we know, social media can serve the same purpose. Regarding concerts, for me, it’s important to recognize that artists performing in front of 60,000+ people are obviously aware that even their smallest interactions can be captured by cameras. But there’s a difference between knowing you might be filmed and knowing, with absolute certainty, that you’re being broadcast on the stadium’s enormous screens. And we’ve certainly seen how a particular member’s behavior appears to become considerably more exaggerated when they know they’re being filmed, ESPECIALLY during televised concerts. But even within that environment, I think it’s possible to distinguish between interactions deliberately directed toward an audience and interactions that unfold organically between two people who happen to be sharing a stage. The former is designed to be witnessed; the latter occurs in the presence of witnesses. And while both may ultimately be captured on camera, that doesn’t necessarily make them equivalent. I think when the intimacy displayed onstage consistently differs from the dynamic we observe offstage, that’s evidence of toxic and calculated fan service! But tbh, there was something almost eerie about hearing JK himself acknowledge fan service. To me it almost felt like an inadvertent confession. Particularly in light of everything we’ve witnessed throughout this leg of the tour, it felt like a moment of breaking the fourth wall. Almost like he was acknowledging the performance behind the performance, and acknowledging what the industry encourages or requires them to do.

I saw a blog give a great explanation of this as well and part of the breakdown talked about moments on stage that happen repeatedly even though the actual action may differ. So clear examples on this tour would include: the drone catch; the Butter trio; Mic Drop’s “Did you see my bag”; JM and JK during Fire; Dynamite dance break - all these moments show up every show on the big screen (and live viewings) but what happens differs from show to show and they are all meant to entertain the audience (I am sure there are more moments that would count as well). Small taps while walking past - not fan service because they aren’t usually being done to the camera for the audience, we get them on fancams.

to answer your question with an opinion, its because perception is subjective. we see what we want to see. the same reason why a wife won't see a cheating husband or a boss doesnt see an employee with a crush. we are blind to what doesnt make us happy. that's why everyone is so adamant that their 'ship' is the 'real' one. sad but human nature. now I have a question. why do people treat these boys like gods? what is with the obsession. they are entertainers not drs, scientists or teachers. they aren't out their curing cancer. why aren't we screaming over the people who bring water to a village without. its all about perspective 😃

I hate to say it, but at this point, the only fan service that’s gonna satisfy Taekookers is a straight-up sex tape. They’ve crossed the line so hard—they’re literally drawing diagrams of members sitting next to each other to figure out where their hidden limbs are, then writing AO3 fics about it. They sexualize every single moment between JK and V. Every new photo that drops just gives them more ammo to write porn. I really hope they can escape this, but honestly, I don't see it happening.

I guess, a lot of Army know what GS means and that it is actually a part of K-Pop, often manifested in contracts etc. 🤔 But there are also some fans obviously, who think this is the confirmation of a relationship, for what they waited so long. 🤷🏻‍♀️
