@drkathynickerson: Do Lindsay Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, and the judge actually like each other? Watching their courtroom exchanges, you might think otherwise. As a psychologist, my read is that there may be more mutual respect than their disagreements suggest. Reddington pushes hard, speaks plainly, and challenges the judge. Then he softens his approach with an apology or an acknowledgment of how well the judge knows the case. That combination can be a smart negotiation strategy: push your point, then repair the tension so the relationship can withstand the next disagreement. My impression is that these two experienced professionals understand each other, and perhaps even admire each other. Of course, courtroom behavior cannot tell us how either man privately feels. I suspect they’ve known each other for decades, it’s a bit of a performance to prove that despite them being friends they can stay impartial and still carry out fair justice.

I think you can like each other outside of work and this is their work. Red is a defense attorney. He knows what he’s up against. And I think the judge respects that he’s good at his job

I think they have a good relationship and respect for one another. I don’t work in the judicial system, but from what I understand about the courts is they all know each other and mostly respect that everyone is doing the job they are there to do. I have not seen KR in action in other trials but it seems like there may be a level of comfort between them that contributes to that dynamic.
