One night in July 2019, the cartoon covering a Chinese streamer's face slipped on camera, and her follower count skyrocketed from less than 100,000 to over 900,000 in a week. But the streamer she was with that night made even more money off the incident than she did. She streamed on the Chinese live streaming platform Douyu, a site that works a lot like Twitch, as Her Highness Qiao Biluo. Her streaming persona relied on her sweet, girlish voice. Her real face was always concealed by a cartoon image of a young anime girl. Her face was her product, and she was stingy with it, promising to reveal it when she hit 100,000 subscribers. Then she joined a PK, an event where two streamers share the screen and race to get viewers to give them paid gifts, and whichever gets more wins. During it, her face cartoon malfunctioned. The streamer she was with, Mix Qingzi, was the first to notice. Qingzi's first reaction was to ask Qiao how she made the face cartoon, because Qingzi wanted to make one herself, a male version. Qiao's revealed face was much older than her voice implied. Asked if her voice meant she was a little girl, she responded,

She later said that was a joke, and that she was born in 1990. In the week after she revealed her face, a site that tracks streamer income showed that Qiao took in around 80,000 yuan in paid gifts, or around $12,000. Qingzi, the streamer she was with that night, earned 191,000 yuan, or around $28,000. After that, Qiao said the whole thing had been planned as a publicity campaign that she said she had paid 280,000 yuan, about $40,000, to promote. The day she said that, Douyu permanently suspended Qiao's account. In a statement, the platform said that it had investigated and found that she had staged the reveal as a publicity stunt and that the stunt had caused "a bad social impact." It may seem odd for a platform to punish a streamer who drew a crowd. But in China, platforms are held responsible for the content on their streams, and the Ministry of Culture had levied a fine against Douyu in 2017 for the content streamed by its streamers. So Douyu banned her on its own. About a week later, an industry association made up of the platforms, and set up under government guidance, banned her from streaming on any platform in China for five years. Then, three weeks after Douyu's ban, Qiao changed her story, saying that there was no campaign at all. The reveal was an accident, she claimed, and she made up the publicity-stunt story to cover her embarrassment. She got banned for a publicity stunt that she now says she made up. Hiding one's face until enough people pay to reveal it is a common sales tactic on Chinese streaming platforms. What Qiao's case demonstrated was how much the reveal was worth: at least a ninefold increase in viewers, more revenue for the streamer broadcasting with her than for her, and a five-year ban from the entire industry.
