@science.nature: One doctor gave sight back to thousands who had spent years in darkness. 👁️ Dr Cathy Schanzer was an American eye surgeon who performed more than 10,000 eye operations in Africa. Her journey began in 1988 and she later helped open the Southern Eye Clinic of Serabu in Sierra Leone. The clinic offers exams, medicines, glasses and surgery free of charge. It is not uncommon for patients to walk for days to reach it, according to Guthrie Health. ❤️ Imagine seeing your child’s face again after years. Dr Schanzer passed away in 2025, yet her clinic remains one of the busiest in West Africa. 🌍 Her legacy is simple and powerful. She gave people the gift of sight. 📌 Sources: Lowery Funeral Home obituary of Mary Cathleen Schanzer, Guthrie Health, Mission Doctors Association 2023 Catholic Doctor of the Year release, Southern Eye Institute
