She finished high school at 12, got into med school at 13, and on October 23 she walked for her doctorate in education at Columbia Southern University in Alabama. She is 17. Right behind her on the same stage was her mama, Daphne McQuarter, picking up her bachelor's in psychology. Daphne spent years putting her own school on hold so Alena could chase hers. She is also raising two grandsons, 11 and 8, the same way. Her rule has always been simple: never put a child in a box. A principal told Alena in fifth grade that she could not do it.
