The biggest announcement is that the standard qualifying period for ILR will increase from 5 years to 10 years for most migrants. However, there are important exceptions, particularly for certain healthcare workers, public-service workers and high earners. #1. What the new ILR rules say: *Category of migrant | Proposed qualifying period; - Most work-visa migrants= 10 years. - Higher earners (over £50,271)= 5 years. - Top earners (over £125,000)= 3 years. - Eligible public-service workers= 5 years. - Certain existing care workers earning at least £25,000= 5 years. - Certain refugees arriving through safe routes= 5 years. - Some refugees arriving through irregular routes= Up to 20 years. - Small-boat arrivals= Up to 30 years . There has been a significant change from the original proposal. * The government initially considered making some care workers wait 15 years. * The revised announcement allows many existing care workers who entered or switched routes before May 2025 to retain a five-year pathway, subject to condition.
