I had a mom cry to me because she said the time I messaged her about how great of a day her son had they both cried because usually when a teacher is messaging her it’s because he’s not cooperating and it wasn’t ever anything positive. She said it made him emotional because he wasn’t used to it.

Not me, but my friend is dealing with something like this her first year of teaching. What would you do if the parents seem absent/like they don’t really care how he’s doing???

in improv this concept is called “gifting” - you tell a character some traits about themselves and they absorb them and become them - like casting a spell, words are powerful! ✨💖

What if it’s 6 classes of 30 and 25 of them act like that in every period

You gave him a chance to rise when he felt there was no way. You showed that you believed he could become what you wrote. When you believed it, he began to believe it.

Holy… this is genius. I feel that my students that need it most would make a joke out of it, but at this point, I’m willing to try anything.

This is great! Out of curiosity, did you happen to share your idea with the other teachers this boy struggles with?

I love this idea so much. It’s so practical and effective. I’m currently in my fourth year of teaching 6th grade ELA. The importance of positive communication cannot be understated—that’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my few years of teaching and it’s so encouraging to see students strive for that weekly recognition. Even if they seem like they’re “too cool for it” at first, once they see their peers and friends get the recognition, that causes them to rise to the occasion. Thank you for sharing this idea about the letter!! Love it♥️

Would you send a letter home every five days that he was good? Or did you just send it home those first five days he was good?

Learning about this in school psychology grad school. Positive parent relationships are key! You need them to be on your side, they need to see the value in education and truly believe you want what’s best for their child

I love this. I feel like this is such an impactful approach for the student as well. How we talk about children can greatly affect their sense of self. Of course they can make bad decisions, but it can be good to have a reminder that they are not bad people, and that they have potential. You didn’t just give him an opportunity and form an alliance with the parents, because you also looked at a child acting out and chose to see the good in him.

more teachers need to hear this!! it’s so true!! coming from a retired “bad kid”. Also, treating the kid like you would treat another student who doesn’t give problems is important as well. When i was treated differently or outwardly called “bad” or knew my teacher dodnt like me, i would continue to act that way. when i thought a teacher liked me, id want to continue to make them like me and not let them down
