@murtazaviews: UK immigration expert Riaz Chaudhry @Muhammad Riaz Anwar explains the positive measures in Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s latest immigration announcement, including protections for eligible care workers and faster settlement routes for some migrants. Under the announced arrangements, care workers who entered or switched into the route before May 2025 can retain their five-year route to permanent settlement, provided they earn at least £25,000 annually and meet sponsorship, employment and other eligibility requirements. Some care workers who do not qualify will have an opportunity to apply for another five-year visa and move away from their previous employer, offering a potential lifeline to those affected by rogue sponsors. Five-year settlement routes will also remain available to qualifying doctors, nurses, teachers and higher earners, while the highest earners could qualify after three years. The concessions accompany wider reforms extending the standard settlement period to ten years, so eligibility will depend on individual circumstances.

Will the new £25,000 annual earnings threshold be applied retrospectively to previous years, starting from 2023, or will it only apply to earnings from the date the new rules come into effect? In particular, how will this affect existing Health and Care Worker visa holders who entered the UK in 2023 and whose salaries have increased annually in line with the National Minimum Wage?
