It won’t work like that though cuz you’re destroying the chest. It’s fake bro, you’re just losing the chance to get it

This is me in 2018. First year, going into second. First tech event I ever attended. GDG DevFest, USIU. I went with my friends from campus. None of us knew much. We barely knew what half the talks were about. I remember trying to look like I belonged. But something happened in that room that I've never shaken off. I met people working at Andela. People at Microsoft, at Google, at companies I had never even heard the names of. They had MacBooks I couldn't afford. Some of them had driven there. And they were talking about building things, shipping things, getting paid for things, like it was normal. That was the day I decided I was not going to be casual about this. I was going to lock in and learn everything I could. Here's the part people miss though. It wasn't the talks that changed my trajectory. It was the people. Some of the people I met that day, as a clueless first year, are still my friends today. Opportunities I've had since then trace back to conversations from that one event. One day. I didn't even have anything to offer yet. I just showed up and made sure people knew who I was and what I wanted to do. In the Whiteboard Series we talk about the four resumes everyone needs. The paper resume. The recommendation resume. The social media resume. And the people resume. The people resume is the one that actually moves your career. And you can't write it at home. You build it by showing up. Events. Communities. Rooms where people who are ahead of you are standing around with a cup of tea. That is exactly why Mctaba hosts tech events every single month. Not because we love organising chairs. Because people have walked up to me after our events and told me they met an employer in that room. They interviewed. They got the internship. They found someone to build with. That is the whole point. Look at the second photo. Same person, years later. Completely different versions of myself. That journey started in a room we almost didn't go to. Our next one is Saturday 12 December. Graduation plus the developer end-year party. If you're building, learning, hiring, or just trying to figure out where to start, be in that room. Tickets are up at mctaba.com/events. Link in the comments too. Show up. Your people resume won't write itself.
