I find that american sarcasm is often playing the fool and british sarcasm is often playing the bully so theres kind of a disconnect there.

American sarcasm is playing stupid very believably. It’s part of why foreigners think we are all legitimately stupid; we have a lot of practice at pretending and foreigners often literally can’t tell we’re joking. British sarcasm seems to be playing mean, and that will not go over well with most Americans.

What you guys call a sarcasm is just being mean in the same normal tone of voice. In America, sarcasm is kind of making fun of yourself and being self deprecating

There’s no tone change with UK sarcasm, you guys say it exactly the same as if you were serious, in the US there’s a clear change of tone

we are friendly people, so British sarcasm, which makes the other person the butt of the joke, doesn't go over well

so British sarcasm is actually what Americans would call bullying. they think you're being mean to them for no reason. Americans sarcasm turns inward or looks at the irony of a situation, it doesn't target people

Hot take: Americans are much more sarcastic and dry-witted than the British, which often goes over their heads

The way the British banter can be seen as rude to Americans, because it revolves around being a bully and not actually being friendly about it.

Sometimes there can be a really fine line between sarcasm and being passive aggressive/mean. I’m not saying you’re leaning one way or the other- I clearly don’t know- but it is something to think about. 🤷♀️

British sarcasm is more “negging” here, which a lot of ppl don’t like from a stranger. Maybe if you had a certain relationship with someone, sure.

I think there’s a disconnect because with American sarcasm the sender is painted as the fool, and with British sarcasm the receiver is painted as the fool, so we don’t immediately understand it as sarcasm, it just comes off as mean.

British sarcasm have a more flat affect meaning you sound more mean than you obviously mean to do cause you don’t change your face or tone. American sarcasm you can tell they’re being sarcastic cause they change their tone and face and are playing dumb
