@drsahilnichani: 🚨NEW PATIENT SAFETY INITIATIVE🚨 PARENTS: If your child is getting worse while waiting in A&E, SPEAK UP. The NHS in England is introducing a standardised Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) in emergency departments to help identify children who are deteriorating. And one of the most important parts of this initiative is recognising the concerns of parents and carers. Because you know your child. You know when they’re behaving differently. You know when something just isn’t right. As a paediatric doctor, I want every parent to understand that their observations matter. If your child is becoming increasingly drowsy, struggling to breathe, less responsive or significantly more unwell, alert a healthcare professional immediately. Don’t assume someone else has noticed. And don’t feel that you’re being difficult by asking for help. Patient safety isn’t just about observations and monitoring equipment. It’s also about listening to families. Please share this with another parent. ❤️ #paediatrics #doctor #nhs #childrenshealth #parenttips
When my baby was born I knew she was sick. I took her to see 3 midwives , called 2 ambulances and an OOH GP. All whom told me she was fine and one of the paramedics even said I was just an anxious mum. At 9 days old I took her back to the hospital and caused a scene and said

I was dismissed as my toddler just having the flu, repeatedly asked if I was a first time mum, even after an ambulance was called when she became unresponsive and her temp hit 41. I refused to leave the hospital until they at least did a blood test. I knew it wasn’t right. They gave way and did tests. Saved her life. She ended up in emergency surgery

Children that are nonverbal and have complex needs, rely on parents knowing the child better than anyone… we shouldn’t have to fight to be listened to, so hopefully this will be implemented and vigorously enforced

Try telling the a&e nurses and staff who will probably bite you if you dare try to stop them to ask something 😒

We are so lucky our paediatric a&e is really good, I bought my son to a&e because his cry sounded different and it turned out he had a major infection and within hours he was very unwell. The team were excellent I wasn’t made to feel hysterical at all, this should be the bare minimum!

My daughter was assessed with PEWS when she was 11 months old in A&E and because of the PEWS score, she skipped the queue and was in a bed seen by a Dr within 10 minutes of arriving. a very good system for them to take all of your child's symptoms into account to give them a clear picture of the risks

They will start interrogating you by saying"what do you mean your child is deteriorating? without following to see the child 😳

Good how it should be, my son was 9 and lost the ability to walk and I took him to a&e but they wanted to palm me off to a GP!! I stood my ground and I’m glad I did he had myositis from having the flu and he needed treatment. So if I had of listened my son could have ended up very poorly, it was already affecting his muscles and kidneys.

Yes!! As a mum of a child who has just recovered from bacterial meningitis (and was vaccinated), trust your gut and tell the doctors. Our docs and nurses were incredible and treated her so so quickly. They listened to me as soon as I expressed concern, trusted me and acted so quickly that she has no long term issues. This new system is amazing.

This makes sooooo much sense! Took my boy in today and the nurse was so attentive! She did the heart rate and everything (didn’t happen before when I went a while back) and was very clear I could stay if I wanted to 🫶🏻
