In 2018, the world's most famous League of Legends player, known as "Faker," won a silver medal for Korea at the Asian Games. It got him nothing. That year, League of Legends was only a demonstration event at the Asian Games, which meant that it was not included in the official medal count. In 2023, though, it became an official event. Korea won gold, and Faker and five teammates were exempted from regular military service. The player was the same, the game was the same, the nation was the same. The only thing that changed was a decision by the people who run the Asian Games. This is how Korea's exemption system works. All Korean men must serve in the army, for around a year and a half. But, since 1973, if you rank high enough in an approved list that the state has compiled then you can be exempted from service and instead continue your career in your given field. This applies to Olympic medalists, gold medalists at the Asian Games, and winners at about thirty-five classical music and dance competitions. In all these cases, a ranking already exists, and it is made by someone else: a podium, a medal count, or a jury's verdict. BTS did not have such a ranking. They did get number one on the Billboard chart, but a chart reflects sales and streams, not a judge's decision. So, in 2019, a government official said that, because there are no objective criteria in popular music, it was not considered. The state, in other words, is not really judging merit; it is outsourcing the decision to other judges. If an outside body ranks you, you count. If they don't, then success in other forms does not make up for it. The best that BTS could hope for was a deferral, not an exemption. In December 2020, Korea let pop musicians who had received a state cultural medal, which BTS had, to defer their service until the age of thirty. The group's oldest member, Jin, deferred for the maximum amount of time. He enlisted on December 13th, 2022, nine days after his thirtieth birthday, at a military base near the North Korean border, and served for a year and a half, much of it as a drill instructor. By June 2025, all seven members had finished. Jimin, who served as an artillery gunner, said that he sometimes slept inside a self-propelled gun. Faker's exemption hinged on a decision about which events to include in the medal count. BTS didn't even get that far, because there is no medal count for pop music.
