Gus and Spooky survived, which is why Chuck could see them. When Chuck approaches Gus, even though he's with his mom, Chuck just asks, "Are you lost?" Even with Gus's mom with him, because he could only see Gus. Spooky died fighting Bruce while protecting Gus, but the gems somehow gave him defensive powers. That's why they say that in the end, Gus doesn't have powers and isn't a brawler affected by the gems; it's his mom and his dog protecting him at all times. Since Gus is just a child, he isn't able to process everything that happened to him a traumatic event for him. His brain, as a way of defending itself from all the psychological damage, might create illusions of his mother still alive or of Shade himself.
