I so agree with your nailed it! Comparison. It felt more like dare I say, personality than skills for the first few episodes. I prefer a real technical like that one as well.

“pared down recipe”. the recipes are literally make batter/dough. decorate. the technical has always just been an opportunity for them to fuck with the contestants. should just be removed.

Not giving a recipe and detailed instructions is not a true test of skill because even professional bakers follow a recipe if they are making something new. It also seems like the bakers are rarely given enough time which is also unfair to them and the audience.
