Being loved by a good man for almost a year, having someone constantly remind you that you’re beautiful, that your body is doing something incredible, and that he sees nothing wrong with the changes you’re going through. But still having days where the words from your past come flooding back. When you spent a pregnancy hearing from your first child’s father that you were ugly, that every stretch mark made you look nasty, and that your body was disgusting for doing exactly what it was meant to do — creating life — those words don’t just disappear. That’s what trauma does. It stays with you. It changes how you see yourself, even when the person standing beside you sees nothing but beauty. I am beyond blessed to experience this pregnancy with a man who loves me, reassures me, and sees me as a woman growing his child. He makes me feel beautiful even on the days I don’t feel that way myself. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t still moments when I look in the mirror and hear the hurtful things another man once said to me. I wish more men understood just how deeply their words and actions can affect a pregnant woman. Your body is changing, your emotions are already all over the place, and the last thing you should ever have to do is feel ashamed of the body that’s creating your child. Trauma doesn’t automatically disappear just because someone better comes along. You can be loved properly and still be healing from the way someone else made you feel.
