@whiskeybydesign: Barnaby, the badger, sat inside his hollow trunk, staring down at his paws. His eyes were red, and his chest felt hollow. Early that morning, while moving his massive pottery bowl, the one he had spent three months carving from a fallen birch log to hold the harvest soup, his foot had caught on a root. The bowl had tumbled down the embankment, cracking squarely down the middle into the damp soil. He hadn't thrown it in anger. He hadn't hidden it out of malice. He had simply been too heartbroken and embarrassed by his own clumsiness to tell anyone yet. He needed time to collect his thoughts. When he finally stepped outside into the crisp afternoon air to find a rope to bind the wood, he ran into Clover and Beatrice. "Good afternoon," Barnaby said softly, his voice raspy from a morning of quiet disappointment. Clover looked at him, her eyes darting to his mud-stained paws. A sharp wave of suspicion washed over her face. Instead of her usual cheerful bounce, she stepped backward, hiding her basket behind her. "Oh. Hello, Barnaby. We were just ... leaving." Beatrice didn't even look him in the eye. She turned her head away, her posture rigid and cold. "We know what happened, Barnaby. You didn't have to keep it a secret. It's a shame some people can't appreciate the effort a community puts into things." # Before Barnaby could ask what they meant, the two turned and walked away down the path, leaving him standing alone in the cold shadows. A heavy weight pressed down on his chest. They were judging him already, assuming the worst of him without even asking what had happened. The sting of their rejection cut deeper than the loss of his pottery bowl. All rights reserved. Copyright © 2026 by Author Name.
