Originally opened in the 1940s, it operated as a roadside attraction throughout much of the mid-20th century. The privately operated zoo featured a variety of animals, including monkeys, bears, and exotic birds, alongside a general store that attracted visitors and families from the surrounding area. After permanently closing, the former zoo gradually fell into disrepair and became a forgotten attraction hidden within the surrounding woodland. Over the years, the abandoned property gained notoriety among local hikers and urban explorers, who discovered remnants of its former attractions, including deteriorating wooden animal cages, old shacks, and graffiti-covered structures scattered throughout the vegetation. However, much of the site’s remaining structures suffered significant damage over time, particularly following a fire around early 2020 that reportedly destroyed or severely damaged several wooden buildings and enclosures. Today, the Coxville Zoo remains a haunting reminder of Austin’s forgotten attractions and an unusual chapter in the city’s local history.
