you can pick up a pro grade nikon DSLR from the early 2010s for under 200$, with plenty of great lens options under 100$ each. start with a versatile zoom and a fast prime and also get yourself a used pro speedlight. budget gear sucks, used premium gear is always better

Get a DSLR. You can get one used on eBay for cheap. I got a Nikon D60 with two (kit) zoom lenses for just over $100.

check out Canon refurbished, they have the same warranty as new and they usually have really good sales! I wouldn't invest in a DSLR right now since most manufacturers are moving away and dropping support for them. I would go mirrorless. and as a photographer that shoots weddings professionally with a Canon R5, I will say my best recommendation for an affordable mirrorless with amazing quality would be the canon R100. I have one for travel and love it!

estate/yard sales, any older DSLR you can get your hands on. Play with shutter and aperture priority modes first to get a feel for how the settings work. Then go manual mode. Then look at vintage lenses for your brand, really help with getting a handle on manual focus and FStop. I started with a Canon EOS Rebel XS I inherited from my aunt, got a cheap T6 off marketplace, and slowly kept sniping good deals from there. It takes time but just stick with it, you'll find what works best for your style!

Check out the m4/3 cameras from lumix or Olympus. They offer some smaller bodies and smaller lenses. Low light takes some practice with fast moving kids /pets. My g95 also does great video

Sony all the way , just know if you get canon R full frame series you are locked into canon lenses and can only buy RF mount which are expensive 😭

Canon 5d mkii was my favorite camera I’ve ever owned, I shoot fuji now, but I have just bought my 3rd 5dmkii body after years of being without one because I missed it so much. Very inexpensive for a clean example of one, and the EF lens economy is fantastic!

Look for a canon 5D mark iii or iv. A perfect budget friendly step into shooting that way. A 50mm and a 5dM3 can probably be found for under $500

if you're still learning or don't really need a pro camera, the Sony A6400 (or 6700 if you do video)
