Because they were Paxton once so they know how isolating it can be sometimes.

As a Deaf person I understand both perspectives, some people will uncomfortable if some stranger that is taking ASL classes randomly comes up to them and try signing. However when someone is Deaf and especially at Paxtyn’s age is excited to see another Deaf person and wants to meet them I think that’s so normal because there’s not a lot of people who is like us. And it can be refreshing and exciting to see other people who are like us and signing! It’s natural!

Deaf or not if a child came up and spoke to me while I was with my friends, we would be 💯 ok with it. He’s a little boy, he seen an opportunity he doesn’t often get and took it. I think it’s fab that he had the confidence to do so. Well done Paxton 👏👏👏👏

Deaf culture is definitely have a full length conversation with anyone and everyone you run into in the hearing world who signs. This comment is so weird to me as a coda i have never had a deaf person who found out i signed not want to have a conversation with me.

Deaf lady here ! What utter ridiculousness, please continue to allow your child to engage with other deaf people, they enjoy this experience specially from a young child that’s learning.

If a child gets excited and goes up to a stranger to talk to them, they can either choose to engage or respectfully shut the conversation down - its up to the parents to pick up on the social queues. that goes for everyone, not just a certain community. My son loves motorbikes, and if he sees one he will want to go and look at it. sometimes the owner gets excited to chat to him, other times they give a polite wave and we keep our distance and let them get on with their day.

When we walk around we hear convos as we walk around all day every day for him to walk around and see a convo for a moment is not the norm.

The deaf community is usually pretty accepting and understanding, there's always the exceptions, but I've been to deaf expos and they're so welcoming

I personally know only enough sign language to understand what the person wants or needs but I do feel bad cause sometimes I catch myself staring at their hands instead of their face but I try my best to go back and forth

I always wondered how do you interact or how would you interact with Paxton or overall with deaf person over the phone on the call? Or would you just text or how the person be able to hear the phone ring or even such things as alarms?

I don’t understand how it would be rude. Don’t people ever go up to other people to compliment them or talk to them? Just me….ok🤷🏼♀️🤔

I’m not deaf but hearing kids interrupt hearing adult strangers all the time and in my experience most people stop and listen and interact. I don’t see how this is much different in the “normal” context.

when I took ASL in college, it was a requirement for us to go to an event with primary deaf or hard of hearing people. the whole point was to be engaged with their community and to better our skills with actual experience. you being a mother and choosing to be engaged in the ASL community is the right thing to do!!! it will benefit your sons development and your skills as well!! also, you can make so many connections to support your boy. some people can be ridiculous and full of negativity!

Former ASL student here and I was taught the actual opposite and it’s extremely welcome and the community loves when people hearing or non hearing come up and sign at any level - obviously there is some discernment there (does it look like a personal convo etc) but ..
