I had this on repeat when I was fresh out of undergrad and decide I was going to move to NYC. I took a 26 hour dirty greyhound bus from my small hometown in Mississippi with a population of 1,600 people to NYC. That was 14 years ago. Happy to report that I still live in NYC (upper west side) and I’m now a corporate lawyer. This city is tough but if you stick it out you’d be surprised who this city can turn you into.

Manhattan is also named ‘new york’. Like when addressing mail, writing ‘new york, ny’ meant manhattan (aka the city) so when he says ‘new york new york’ he’s actually saying ‘new york, NY’ which is a song originated from the broadway musical ‘new york, NY’ and it was all about manhattan. Lol

I have NEVER left my province, let alone my country, but my boyfriend and his mom flew me out for the very first time back in 2022. They took me to NYC for the very first time in December of that year, and I almost cried. Hearing this song and feeling the excitement of just being a simple minded tourist in a city I could only dream of, cause I live in poverty where I’m from, it was just amazing. I’ll forever chase that high! Riding a bike around the corner, the speaker blaring this song, and seeing times square for the first time…
