They’re cephalopod mollusks and their circulatory system is closed, but with 2 extra "auxiliary pumps". Here’s how it works: 1. 2 branchial hearts - They’re located at the base of each of their 2 gills. - Their only job is to pump deoxygenated blood to the gills so they can fill up with oxygen. - They’re smaller and beat at a different rhythm than the main heart. - Fun fact: when an octopus swims, these 2 hearts stop. That’s why they prefer to walk along the seafloor instead of swim, because swimming drains them super fast. 1. 1 systemic heart - It’s the "main" heart and it’s in the center of the body. - It receives the oxygenated blood from the gills and pumps it strongly through the rest of the body: organs, muscles, brain. - It’s the largest of the three and the one that does the heavy lifting. Why do they need 3? Because octopus blood is super thick and viscous. Moving it through 8 muscular arms + a boneless body takes a huge amount of pressure. A single heart couldn’t handle it all. It’s like having one main pump and 2 booster pumps just for oxygenation. And why do they have blue blood? 🤔🤔 Here’s where the chemistry comes in. Your blood and mine are red because of IRON. Octopus blood 🐙 is blue because of COPPER. The key molecules: Hemocyanin vs Hemoglobin Uses iron to grab oxygen. Uses copper to grab oxygen. Blood with oxygen is bright red. Blood with oxygen is blue. Blood without oxygen is dark red. Blood without oxygen is transparent/colorless. It floats inside red blood cells. It floats freely in the blood, not in cells. Advantages of blue blood: 1. Works better in extreme cold: Copper grabs oxygen much better than iron in very cold, low-oxygen water, like the deep ocean floor where many octopuses live. 2. Son moluscos cefalópodos y su sistema circulatorio es cerrado, pero con 2 "bombas auxiliares" extra. Así funciona: 1. 2 corazones branquiales - Están ubicados en la base de cada una de sus 2 branquias. - Su único trabajo es bombear sangre desoxigenada hacia las branquias para que se llene de oxígeno. - Son más pequeños y laten a un ritmo diferente al corazón principal. - Dato loco: cuando un pulpo nada, estos 2 corazones se detienen.
