Thirty-four years after Zionist militias massacred the Palestinian village of Deir Yassin, their fighters came back as tour guides. Deir Yassin sat at the western edge of Jerusalem. In January 1948 its notables agreed with the Jewish neighbourhood of Giv'at Shaul not to fight each other. On 9 April 1948 the Irgun and Lehi attacked it, and Haganah machine-gunners helped them for part of the battle. More than a hundred villagers were killed, many of them women and children. By 1982 Irgun and Lehi veterans had started a yearly tour of the village. One Saturday that spring, fifty or sixty adults came with dozens of children, and the guides told it as a battle. Nahum Barnea, a reporter for the Israeli daily Davar, went along. He left about noon; two people on the tour told him what happened next. A man in the crowd asked to speak. Zvi Ankori had commanded the Haganah force that took over the village after the attack. He said:

He said: "I went into six or seven houses. I saw cut-off genitals and the smashed bellies of women. By the bullet marks on the bodies, it was deliberate murder." Someone in the crowd mocked him. Then one of the Irgun veterans answered: "A good Arab was considered a dead Arab." Barnea wrote that the purpose of the tours was "to erase the disaster." That year Israel's prime minister was Menachem Begin, who had commanded the Irgun in 1948. In his memoir, The Revolt, he wrote that the news of Deir Yassin had helped them, and that "panic overwhelmed the Arabs." Israel never let the people of Deir Yassin go home. The men who emptied their village came back to glorify what they did.
