Before Uganda became a British colony, King Kabalega ruled Bunyoro, a powerful kingdom with its own government, army, trade networks, and territories. When British-led forces advanced in the 1890s, backed by African soldiers and rival kingdoms, Kabalega refused to submit, and the campaigns brought destruction, displacement, and thousands of deaths. When conventional warfare failed, he turned to guerrilla tactics, fighting from forests and remote territories for years until his capture in April 1899 and exile to the Seychelles.
