@mollypelletier.rd: Someone clears their throat 40 times in a meeting and says it's just allergies. It might be pepsin. Pepsin is a digestive enzyme from your stomach. With silent reflux (LPR), it can travel up and settle on throat tissue. In lab testing, pepsin stayed stable for 24 hours at the near-neutral pH of the throat and switched back on when acid returned. That irritation feels like mucus you can't clear, so you clear and clear, and each clear irritates the tissue more. To cut down how much reflux reaches your throat, start with the 3-Hour Buffer: no food in the 3 hours before you lie down (drinks are fine). It gives your stomach time to empty before you're flat. Send this to the coworker who's always clearing their throat. 📚 Johnston et al., 2007, Laryngoscope, prospective translational study (porcine in vitro model plus enzyme assay, not human throat tissue), human pepsin 3b stable for at least 24 hours at pH 7.0 and 37°C and kept 79% of its activity after re-acidification to pH 3.0, PMID 17417109. #refluxtok #silentreflux #lpr #pepsin #throatclearing
