South Africa, on the other hand, can still trade with China, Russia, India and other countries. We can redirect our exports and build stronger trade relationships elsewhere, which could help offset the losses from reduced trade with America. So while America may think it is putting pressure on South Africa, it also risks losing access to our markets, resources and trade opportunities. South Africa has other options, and America has a lot to lose if those trade relationships shift elsewhere. That’s also why they haven’t completely closed the door. They continue to say the door is open because they know there is still a lot at stake for American businesses and their economic interests.
