@moneybymelissa: I’m trying to buy back my time, not trade it for $17 an hour. Barista FIRE might be great for some people, but after 25 years of building my career, I’d rather work a little longer at my current earning level than depend on a lower-paying job to make early retirement work. It’s not about never working again. It’s about having the choice. #baristafire #earlyretirement #financialindependence #firemovement

good points. I love the idea of doing a part time job you love but I have yet to find a part time job I'm qualified for that I love.

barista fire isn’t about being a barista

I think the point of barista fire is for those who work really high stress jobs and work long hours. It’s something to work towards if you’re on the brink of burn out.

I took it a little differently. Like it means if you choose to work, you can pursue something that makes you happy, and if it doesn’t earn much income, it’s ok because your financial future is funded.

Recently I’ve been leaning toward getting a part time retirement job once I’m done in corporate so that I have a routine and ideally doing something that I enjoy/helping people. I don’t think people realize how challenging it can be to retire and lose all of your routine

I could not thrive in a corporate job no matter how hard I tried. I barista FIRE’d and now I manage a cat cafe lolll had to preserve my mental load.

I already know I can’t take an “easy” job. I did all those “easy” retail, food service, customer facing jobs in my youth. They were harder than my desk Corporate job. I am not cut out for that anymore.

Barista fire doesn’t have to be barista-ing. You can go run a non profit or something you’re passionate about

I don't think that's necessarily what that means. to me it means that I can work whatever job and not have to worry about having to meet a certain salary

I want to become financially independent and retire early specifically so I can take jobs like being a barista. I don’t care about selling my time or anything, I just think it would be a fun job to do for a while. There’s a ton of low paying jobs that I think would be fun that I can’t go for until I’m financially free first

I’m going until 62 thanks to my golden handcuffs, aka pension, so not exactly FIRE. BUT if it were FIRE, it would be PHATTT!

right, I'm banking $60k a year into retirement at my job, why do I want to quit to make $25k / year take home? 😂

Not in retail but I think it might be nice to work at a florist or bookshop a few hours a week just to explore that experience.

If you work two more years, take all of that and put it in bonds. I think you’d be close to the take-home of a $17 an hour 35 hours a week job

Same here. I took a severance and I’m running straight at FIRE. I’ll produce an income, but only when and where I want.

💯. Not a hot take. Go when you have the freedom to do what you want, even if that is nothing. Retired at 51 and not punching a clock for ANYONE

Some people are so stressed out and burned out that they feel better in the $17/hour job. I am with you, though. Sticking with the corporate career until I am FIRE. (Soon!)
