State party chair Curtis Hertel responded: “Congresswoman Stevens is not a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party, nor will she be in the future.” The Washington Post reported the statement amounted to her expulsion from the party. Her name has been removed from the party’s website, and her chief of staff and communications director have resigned. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the endorsement a “despicable betrayal.” President Trump, who backs Rogers, praised Stevens’ move.
