@drsherrymaxy: Sometimes you keep showing up for your mother, not because the relationship has been healthy, but because you learned that being a good daughter means always being there. You answer the calls. You make the visits. You put your feelings aside. And somewhere along the way, obligation starts to feel like love. But being a good daughter shouldn’t require you to abandon your own emotional needs. You can care about your mother and still question the expectations you’ve been carrying. #MotherWound #EmotionallyImmatureMothers #MotherDaughterRelationships #GoodDaughterSyndrome #HealthyBoundaries
This is the deepest darkest hole I’ve fallen into my whole adult life.

She still doesn’t check how I’m actually doing. She texts to whine about me not stopping to check on her. Yet I’m the one with a full plate. Kids, life, work, sports. But somehow her well being is my responsibility in her head.

I quit showing up. I finally had to come to terms with the fact that, as an adult, if I allow someone in my life who constantly abuses me; even if that person is my own mother, I am responsible for that abuse as well. Once I figured that out, I cut off contact. Most peaceful year of my life.

I give NO energy towards my mother and been like that for almost 10yrs. And that space has allowed for me to truly start healing — hard to grow in an environment that refuses to nurture basic decencies.

I am showing up. She gave me up at 13. Nearly 58 now, she is 88. She was an awful mother. Now dying. I have had years of therapy. I am here for her to the extent that I can be, because I don’t want to be alone and dying. And you are right…maybe now I am a good person. A good daughter. I do feel bad for her. And honestly, I feel bad for me too. This just is awful all around.

I finally decided that being a good, mentally healthy person is more important to me than being what she thinks is a good daughter to her.

It took me years to stop feeling guilty. I wouldn’t even post pictures of me with my in-laws because I knew my mom would start telling me I must like them more than I like her.
