I see the two as being a reflection on what she wants her values to be. Gale is perfectly fine with running off in the woods and surviving like animals. Peeta gave her hope in a moment where she was ultimately ready to die.. She was about to give up when he gave her the bread which led to her seeing the flower which led to hope. I understand what Ben is saying because Gale is a very sympathetic character. He also had to live in the hunger, games society, he watched his home, burn to the ground right before him. He was then groomed by President coin because he was close to Katniss and given more power than he should’ve had at the age of 19. She told him that he could deliver the justice he wants with a gun and she will provide it for him. However, he did not go and visit Katniss once after she went to 12. He literally just became the head of the cops and then never talk to her again. I get that she said that she didn’t want to see him but him not checking up on somebody. He called a friend, that he kind of liked more than that is insane since he knows how she is. He knows her mental state and just never talked to her again. It was never a love triangle, and that was obvious from the first conversation in the book. Gale never stood a chance because katniss wanted to live for Hope, he wanted to live to survive. The woman who made dog soup checks in on Katniss more than he does!! Just think about that😭 Team KATNISS 🫣

I do think gale was a kid too, I disagree with the hatred he gets because he was a child, angry with how they were being treated which is INSANELY VALID. Then his anger, grief and guilt after the district 12 bombing was weaponised by coin, her manipulating him to use him against the Capitol. With the prim thing, yes he had the idea of the bombs but I don’t think he had any part in the using the bombs against not only the children of the Capitol but also rebel medics. He didn’t know about that. He also had no part in prim being there in the first place it was all coin. The thing I will say about gale though is that, like katniss and a lot of 12, he views relationships as very transactional. Him and katniss have an agreement that they care for eachother and each others families, they do like/ love eachother but it’s on the basis of that. It was logical for katniss to like him, and she knew that, she cared for gale a lot but she nowhere near thought about him in the same way she did peeta. This being said though, the “love triangle” is and was never the point of the books/movies.

I don’t think Katniss deserved Peeta. I think Katniss should have been with Gale because they were flawed people who deserved no better than each other while Peeta deserved better.
