@nourishingapothecary: CoQ10 or ubiquinol for fertility? Here’s what the difference actually means. Firstly, ubiquinol IS CoQ10. Coenzyme Q10 exists in two forms: ubiquinone, the oxidised form, and ubiquinol, the reduced form. Your body converts between them as part of their normal function. CoQ10 helps transfer electrons within mitochondria, supporting the production of ATP, the energy our cells use. That’s why it attracts attention in fertility. Egg maturation, fertilisation and early embryo development are energy demanding processes. But a plausible mechanism and a guaranteed fertility outcome are very different things. Some IVF studies have reported improvements in ovarian response and embryo measures with CoQ10 supplementation, particularly in selected women with diminished ovarian reserve. That does not establish that it improves live birth rates for everyone, reverses ovarian ageing or corrects age related chromosomal abnormalities. And what about choosing ubiquinol? Some formulations achieve higher blood levels than others, but the entire formulation matters, including how CoQ10 is dissolved and delivered. The word “ubiquinol” alone doesn’t tell us how well a product will perform. Higher blood levels also don’t automatically mean better egg quality or a greater chance of pregnancy. This is why we consider your age, fertility history, previous IVF response, medications and existing supplements before recommending a form or dose.
