@mbilalmahmood: San Francisco passed a law making clear that City-owned land and facilities cannot be used to facilitate federal immigration enforcement. That law is not optional, and it must be followed. Since learning that ICE was using an MTA-owned property, we have been working closely with MTA and the Mayor’s Office to understand how this happened, while also engaging with community advocates. Today MTA Director Julie Kirschbaum took the first steps towards ensuring ICE ceases its operations in this city-owned parking garage. But we still need transparency and accountability. That is why I am submitting a formal letter of inquiry to both MTA and Recreation and Parks, demanding a full accounting of their parking lots and garages, who holds contracts to operate them, who those contractors may be subcontracting with, and whether ICE or any other federal immigration enforcement agency has access to these properties. We wrote the ICE Free Zones law to ensure that San Francisco’s public land serves the people of San Francisco, not to provide a foothold for immigration enforcement. We will continue to work to ensure transparency about how this happened, accountability for any violations, and concrete safeguards to ensure it never happens again.
