@popculturefangurl: Weird Al Yankovic called Kurt Cobain to ask if he could parody Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Cobain's first question was whether it would be a song about food. Yankovic told him it was about how nobody can understand his lyrics, and Cobain said yes. The call came in January 1992, while Nirvana were rehearsing for their first appearance on Saturday Night Live. Yankovic told Loudwire in 2014 that he was very nervous and didn't know how Cobain would take the request. Cobain asked about food because a lot of Yankovic's hits at the time were about food. After the explanation, Yankovic said, there was probably half a beat on the phone before Cobain answered, "Yeah, yeah, sounds like a funny idea." The parody, Smells Like Nirvana, came out in 1992. Its video recreated Nirvana's, and Yankovic told Howard Stern that they had the same janitor, some of the same cheerleaders and a lot of the same crowd. Yankovic has said one of his favorite quotes is Cobain saying he didn't realize he had made it until he saw the Weird Al video.
