HARLINGEN, TEXAS Cristobal Stephan Garzez has been sentenced to 20 YEARS IN PRISON for the death of 46-year-old tow truck operator David Zapata, a husband, father of four, and hardworking member of the towing and recovery industry. On July 8, 2025, David was doing what thousands of tow truck operators do every single day: working along a dangerous roadway, securing a vehicle to his tow truck. He never made it home. Garzez struck and killed David while driving intoxicated and fled the scene. He was later apprehended and convicted of intoxication manslaughter. A jury handed down the 20-year sentence after approximately 20 minutes of deliberation. LET THAT SINK IN. 20 YEARS! For far too long, we have watched tow truck operators and other first responders lose their lives on our nation’s roadways, only to see those responsible walk away with minimal fines, suspended licenses, probation, or a slap on the wrist.
