@thesportsontap: Rayuan Lane III is a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He also plays safety for the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Sunday, with 10 seconds left in the first half, he intercepted Daniel Jones at the Jacksonville 8 yard line and ran it back 92 yards for a touchdown. That made it 28 to 0. Without it, Indianapolis was about to cut the lead to 21 to 7. Jacksonville won 42 to 7. Lane also broke up three passes and made four tackles. He went to the United States Naval Academy, and he started the last 43 games of his college career, which is the longest streak any safety has ever had in major college football. Jacksonville drafted him in the sixth round in 2025, 200th overall. He was the 19th Naval Academy graduate ever drafted into the NFL, and the first of those 19 who had played in the secondary. He graduated in May of 2025 and commissioned into the Marines that same month. Which is where this gets complicated, because coming out of a service academy carries an obligation that does not pause for anybody. A 2025 amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act built a path through it. Lane's reserve duties are mostly set aside during the season and he makes that time up in the offseason. Naval Academy athletes generally need approval from the Secretary of Defense to play professional sports at all. In April he swore in a group of local recruits in Jacksonville headed to Parris Island for boot camp. He told News4JAX what that day was about. "I'm still doing what I wanted to do, being in the Marine Corps, but also being able to play, you know, in the NFL." Be straight about how narrow that path is, because the numbers are brutal. Nineteen people have come out of the Naval Academy and been drafted in the entire history of the NFL. Exactly one of them had ever played in the secondary, and that one is him. He is 23 years old. He grew up in Jessup, Maryland. On Sunday he caught the ball on his own 8 yard line and ran 92 yards the other way. #nfl #nflnews #duvall #jaguars #jags
